If you've done some research into the prices of safaris, you have probably noticed that they are not cheap. This is not because operators are gouging customers. In fact, margins for tour operators and the travel industry in general are quite thin given the intense competition for customers. When it comes to expenses for a trip, the major costs are park fees, transportation costs and accommodations.

Gorilla viewing permits, in particular, are very expensive. The reason that the permits are so costly is because each park only issues 6-8 permits per gorilla family per day, to ensure that the gorilla's exposure to humans is limited. 100% of the gorilla permit cost is used by the government for conservation and promotion. Due to their limited availability and high demand, each permit costs $600-$750. Chimpanzee tracking permits range between $50 to $150 each. Each park also may have entry fees per person or per vehicle. Driving long distances in safari vehicles translates into high gasoline and vehicle maintenance expenses. Accommodation costs vary depending on the level of service desired. Of course, guides also need to be paid.

It is normal to tip your guides. For gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking, it is sufficient to tip $5-10 per person for the experience. Your safari driver may be tipped $10 per day.

The company reserves the right to vary the safari services agreed with the client in the event of unpredicted conditions, such as bad weather, road closures, vehicle condition, security issues. In such cases option arrangements will be made as situations permit.

Gorilla trekking permits are in high demand and often sell out three to six months before the trip date. Though it is possible to secure some permits for last minute bookings, it can be a difficult process (permits can be bought and sold in a secondary market by tour operators). Therefore, it is best to plan your trip six months to a year in advance.
