Gorilla treks are the only way to visit one of the rarest animals in the world - the mountain gorillas. Only about 800 mountain gorillas exist today, living in only two locations - the Virunga Mountains along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.
To protect the remaining population, governments have established strict guidelines for human interaction with mountain gorillas. Only a very limited number of gorilla trekking permits are granted and are usually sold out many months in advance. Armed park rangers, who are experts in gorilla behavior, track the habituated gorilla families on a daily basis. Visitors are escorted to the known locations of the gorillas and are allowed one hour of viewing time to minimize interference with the gorillas everyday lives.
